“The Purple Island” (M. Bulgakov) has not been performed in our country yet. Its subtitle is “Main rehearsal of the performance of Jules Verne in the theatre of Genadii Panfilovich – with music, volcanic eruptions and English sailors in fours acts, with a prologue and an epilogue”– just imagine how much fantasy could be hidden in this performance’s action! And how messy the historical era of this rehearsal would be! In the micro space of rehearsing this performance we find macro space of life full of intrigues, treachery, struggles for supremacy and of course – artists’ adjustment to authorities’ requirements. The director’s and author’s adjustment to the authorities on one hand, and to the commission of culture in Stalin’s Moscow on the other. The allegories in the rehearsed performance are historical – red natives bring white araps down from power and confiscate the pearls which the araps sell to Western Europe in order to provide livelihood to the islanders. After a riot, the pearls now belong to the native people, however after breaking all trading connections with civilized world, the tribe dies out of hunger (despite all treasures in their palms). Strange thing is that the post-revolutionary situation in this purple island, is extremely similar to the one in Bulgaria nowadays, having all the treasures in their hands not knowing how to use them. And the censor from the past is….eternal!? Censor never dies, but it develops. All historical eras are “genetically” similar. The previous one creates the new one.

This project has been realized thanks to the financial support of Culture Fund - Varna Municipality
